Meet Bronwyn and Craig Hudson (and family pictured below) who recently returned to New Zealand from the UK and hear what they have to say about building from 12,000 miles away.
‘We first heard about TGA Homes when we were living in the UK. We were looking into building a new home to eventually move home to and had been in touch with a few other building companies but these guys were immediately easy to deal with, even from across the other side of the world.
Communication with TGA Homes is out of this world. Their attitude is we’re going to make this happen and we’re going to make it seamless.
We chose The Lakes to build as we’re originally from Tauranga and one day we’d like to shift back. It’s a great spot as far as commuting to different areas like Auckland, Hamilton and Rotorua, and close to great schooling options. We’d had lots of conversations with Tony as we were a bit unsure of what direction to go so that was really helpful too.
Taking the Design and Build option was the right choice for us. We jumped on a group Skype call with TGA Homes and the architect and that’s when it got really exciting. We were told to draw on the floor plans as much as we liked to show the team what we wanted. It’s a great way of gaining clarity for all parties involved. The amazing thing was by the time we’d had a few Skype calls, emails and the full brief developed, when we got our first set of design plans through we only changed one thing! That one thing was the location of a doorway. We couldn't believe how TGA Homes and the architect had taken on board everything we had mentioned and got it so right first time!
People have asked us what the build process has been like from start to finish and they can’t believe it when we say it was fun! It’s not something you hear everyday but seriously we loved every minute of it.
Although we were miles away and not able to monitor the build on site, we were kept in the loop at every stage of the process. TGA Homes provide online software system which meant we were able to log on at any time to see what was happening, what stages the build was at and any photos. Having online access at our fingertips was fantastic.
Along the way we made a couple of changes but once again nothing was a problem. For example, I wanted to bring our freestanding Fisher & Paykel cooker home so they completely redesigned the kitchen around that without any hassle. The flexibility to meet our requirements was unbelievable, not one thing seemed to phase them. Quite the opposite in fact.
There were so many stand out moments but one that comes to mind is when we came home and Tony took us through our first tour. Originally we were just going to have one line of tiles the length of the bench up to the rangehood but TGA Homes weren’t happy with the look of that once it was installed so they retiled the whole area with no extra cost. We were absolutely rapt with the results.
Best build and property investment tips I can give so far is do your homework. Great communication is key and of course location, location location is a priority. Most importantly: enjoy the process!
We loved it because we worked with an awesome team, we did our homework so we were crystal clear what was non-negotiable, were realistic about the inevitable sacrifices along the way, and we trusted that we had chosen the right people for the job.
The only thing we’d do differently now? Live in it!’
