‘We’re originally from The Netherlands and have been living in New Zealand now for the past 15 years. With two children, one at College and one at Intermediate we wanted a functional home. By Kiwi standards this home wouldn’t be considered big but to us coming from Europe where homes are usually smaller in size; this home offers more than enough space for the four of us.
With TGA Homes we could make adjustments to the original plan. We opted for open plan living, bi-folding and sliding doors in every room and being a chef for years we could make a residential commercial kitchen. The electricity/light plan was made with underfloor heating in the bathrooms, dimmers and a skylight in the hallway.
This was no problem for the team at TGA Homes and this type of flexibility around plan development and build process worked well for both sides.
So well in fact, once we signed off on the project we felt confident enough to book a trip back home and let them get on with it. Reassured we could “watch” the build by logging onto their online interactive management system we appreciated complete transparency right throughout the build process.
Our favourite spot or feature we like in our TGA Home? We really like the polished concrete floors, but we also appreciate clever design features that were adapted along the way. For example, instead of slider doors for the pantry we took some advice and installed 2 bi-fold doors allowing us complete access.
Tony made the right decision to install a glass shower wall instead of the originally chosen tile wall as he felt that would make the room too dark. We’re pleased he did. These might sound like simple solutions but ones we wouldn’t have thought of ourselves.
The flexibility we had to make adjustments was never an issue and the design advice we were given has been invaluable. We love the efficiency of the house and how functional it is. We’ve lived in a lot of houses, and this house is comfortable and relaxed in both its simplicity and style.
Honestly there’s nothing we would do differently. At first we thought maybe we should have had underfloor heating but the wood burner and heat pumps do a great job in winter heating up the rooms.
We’re also happy with the fit out. It feels like the contractors and everyone involved in the project were coming at it from a personal level.
All in all we know this house suits us now as a family of four, it would also make a great rental property and when it comes time the kids fly the nest then we’re sure we’ll be able to enjoy this house for years to come.
