At Tauranga Homes we fully appreciate building a new home is exciting but if like many others you’ve never built before the old adage resonates - “you don’t know what you don’t know”. That’s why we’ve spent some quality time with our professional Interior Designer Vikki Gorton to arm you with invaluable insights and top tips.
Vikki works for Yellow Fox - Residential and commercial interior designers who we partner with at TGA Homes. She has been in the trade for ten years +. Her experience is vast with house renovations and new builds. We tapped into her knowledge bank and this is our top five tips we came away with that we want to share with you.
Remember, never be afraid to ask questions because our aim is to make this new home building experience a great one.
Tip Number One: Lifestyle
Do you have children?, are you downsizing?, do you have pets?, do you like entertaining? It’s time now to think what is going to suit you and your lifestyle.
For example, does your family need durable surfaces with lots of busy little people or are you downsizing and wanting a more refined feel to your home? Do you work from home and if so do you need a separate space to close off from the hustle and bustle of the household? Are you an entertainer? Do you want alfresco dining or a scullery?
Visualise yourself in each room and start creating your very own wish list.
Tip Number Two: Likes and Dislikes
Interior Designers all have mood boards where they start to collect different aspects for different rooms and you can do the same too before you start your build. Pinterest is a handy tool where you can start “pinning” what you like and of course you’ll soon see what you don’t like as well. You’ll see all sorts of inspiration from wallpaper to tiles from tapware to bedrooms; there’s a huge wealth of imagery you can choose from.
Most people know exactly what they don’t like but this “scrapbooking” process helps you get very clear on what you do like. It certainly helps that everyone is on the same page before you hit the shops!
Tip Number Three: What’s Your Inspiration?
When it comes to decorating and picking a colour scheme or theme that helps your home have that natural flow, quite often Interiors Designers will find their inspiration in a single item and from this the look develops. It might be a piece of stone that has different flecks through it, it may be your favourite old chair or it might be what’s going on in the environment that you love - trees, bush, beach ….it might even be just one or two colours you want to use as your base palette. Finding your inspiration is key to making your house your home.
Tip Number Four: Make the Most of What You’ve Got
To make the most of every room we suggest you take the time to sit down and not only consider design but functionality. Rooms like the laundry don’t have to be bulk standard; you can have clever little hanging rails, extra drawers and space for laundry powder and hanging pegs to store your ironing board that always seems to get in the way.
Each room has it’s own purpose so see what clever little tricks and detail you can add to make life that much easier. It may fall outside of our standard specifications but by sharing your ideas and by setting aside additional budget for that area, we can always assist you in reaching your vision.
Tip Number Five: Choose Colours Wisely and Lighting Matters
Yes, we know this is probably two tips in one but it’s worth it you’ll see.
We love bolds and brights, moody darks and greys but you really do have to choose your colours and wallpapers wisely. Remember, dark colours will make a room smaller whilst lighter colours open a room.
Lighting placement and colour choices ultimately define your living spaces. This is where our FREE interior deisgn consult with Vikki will really help you to achieve your dream look.
Vikki will assist you to choose the right colours and tones for the spaces within your home. She will also ensure you achieve a cohesive look for you r home.
